5 tips to Make Your Engagement Photos Swoon Worthy

Updated: Oct 21, 2019

We've all seen them. A friends engagement photos that automatically make your jaw drop.

She looked absolutely breathtaking. He looked like the perfect mix between James Dean and Don Draper. And their level of love and romance captured was an obvious 10.

While you're reminiscing and before you let the green monster of jealousy set in, hear me out:

Your engagement photos can be every bit as swoon worthy, simply by following these 5 easy tips!!

1. Say "yes" to the dress!

I'm not just talking any old dress, here. Cocktail dresses are cute and fun and can be used as a first outfit, but if you really want that wow factor, for your second outfit I suggest going with a fabric that is long, flowing, and can be moved by a gentle breeze. The goal here is to wear something that shows movement. Movement evokes emotion. When you can combine movement in a still frame with the love for your significant other sparkling in your eyes, it's a sure recipe for all of that mood you're looking for!

2. Convince your fiancé to wear a tux or suit.

There's just something so irresistibly classic about a man in a suit. They are tailored specifically to show off a man's masculine build. And since you will be dressed to the nines in your gorgeous dress, he might as well match you! If you choose to wear a cocktail dress for your first look, again, make sure that his look matches you by layering him up like a department store mannequin. But for your formal look, make sure he is in a well fitted suit or tux!

3. Schedule your photoshoot for sunrise or an hour or two before sunset.

The most flattering light of the day is worth waking up early or bouncing out of work early for. It tends to hide imperfections, eliminates harsh shadows that exaggerate wrinkles and dark under eye circles, prevents you from having to squint in the bright sun, and instead makes your skin look glowing and soft and allows you to focus on the emotion of your love rather than how uncomfortable the blazing sun feels in your eyes!

4. Choose a photoshoot location that has a clean, simple backdrop in a neutral color! In my experience, the less bright green vegetation, the better! The simpler the backdrop, the more editorial and high end your images will look!

5. I'm just gonna come right out and say it:

Paying for images that you want to cherish for the rest of your life is not the place to penny pinch.

Hear me out: I am all about a good bargain. However, I've learned over time that there are certain things in life that are well worth the extra dough. And images of such a special time in your life are images that you'll want to print, post, frame, hang, and share for the rest. of. your. life!

Allow yourself to graciously thank your mom or Uncle Bob...and then decline their generous offer to take your engagement photos for free. (Unless, of course, your mom or Uncle Bob actually is a wedding professional. In which case, I urge you snatch that offer UP!) Otherwise, take the time to do some research and find a wedding professional that will document your engagement with a quality that you know you'll love for the rest of forever.
